Before You Start This AWS Course: Prerequisites, AI Tools, and What Your Account Will Actually Cost

I want to set expectations before we dive in: who this course is for, why I'm telling you to lean on AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude Code along the way, and what it'll realistically cost you to spin up an AWS account while you learn.

Who This Course Is Actually For

Let me start by taking some pressure off. I get asked all the time whether someone needs a computer science background or a business degree to take this course, and the honest answer is no. I've had high school students work through this material and come out the other side with a real, working understanding of AWS. You don't need a formal credential to sit down and learn cloud infrastructure.

That said, I'm not going to pretend the playing field is perfectly level. If you've spent time around business operations — budgets, vendor contracts, org charts, that kind of thing — some of the framing in this course will click faster. Same goes if you've dabbled in development or IT and already have some of the jargon in your vocabulary: terms like "provisioning," "latency," or "load balancing" won't be brand new to you. I will be using both business language and developer/infrastructure language throughout, because that's genuinely how the industry talks about this stuff. If you've never heard those terms before, don't panic — I'll explain them as we go — but I'd be lying if I said prior exposure doesn't give you a slight head start.

Professional experience helps too, in a similar way. If you've worked in any role where you had to think about cost tradeoffs, scaling a team, or managing risk, a lot of the "why would anyone design a system this way" questions in AWS will already feel intuitive to you. But again — this is an advantage, not a requirement. I've structured this course assuming zero background, and I mean that. If you're coming in cold, you're not behind. You're just starting at the starting line, same as everyone else who's serious about learning this.

Why I Want You Leaning on AI Tools

Here's something I say early and I mean it sincerely: I want you using AI tools throughout this course. ChatGPT, Claude Code, Gemini, or whatever assistant is built into the platform you're learning on — pick one and keep it open in another tab while you work through the lessons.

The reason is simple. I can't anticipate every question you're going to have. AWS is enormous — there are services I won't cover, edge cases I won't think to mention, and moments where something on your screen won't quite match what's on mine because AWS changed a button or renamed a menu since I recorded this. When that happens, I'd rather you ask an AI assistant and get unstuck in two minutes than sit there frustrated waiting for me to somehow read your mind through a video.

There's also a bigger point buried in here, which is that this is genuinely how the industry works now. Part of what it means to think like a solutions architect is knowing how to pull in the right resource at the right moment instead of trying to hold every fact in your own head. Nobody memorizes all of AWS. The people who are good at this are good at knowing what to look up, who to ask, and how to verify what they're told. Treating an AI assistant as a study partner isn't a shortcut around learning — it's practice for the actual skill. I'd just add one caveat: treat what these tools tell you as a starting point, not gospel. If an answer seems off or doesn't match what you're seeing in the AWS console, cross-check it against AWS's own documentation before you build on top of it.

Setting Up Your AWS Account — What It'll Actually Cost

In the next lesson, I'm going to walk you step by step through creating an AWS account, because that's the first real thing you need before any of the hands-on material makes sense. But I want to set cost expectations now, because I know that's usually the first question on people's minds.

If you've never had an AWS account before, you're likely looking at free tier access — and my recollection is that this covers around 100 hours of usage and a full year of free access to a set of core services. I want to be upfront that I'm going off memory here, not a document in front of me, and AWS has a habit of adjusting its free tier terms over time. So before you sign up or start budgeting around this, take two minutes and check AWS's current free tier page directly. Don't take my word as the final answer on this one.

If you're a returning AWS user — meaning you've had an account before, even if you haven't touched it in years — you probably won't qualify for that free tier again. In that case, expect to pay something in the ballpark of $5 to $10 a month while you're working through this course. That's a rough estimate, not a guarantee, since your actual bill depends on which services you spin up, how long you leave things running, and whether you remember to tear down resources when you're done experimenting (a habit I'll hammer on throughout this course, because forgetting to shut things down is the single most common way people get an unpleasant surprise on their AWS bill).

Either way, we're talking about a small amount of money relative to what you're getting out of this. This isn't a course where you need to provision expensive infrastructure to learn the concepts. But I'd rather you walk in with realistic expectations than be caught off guard by a charge you didn't see coming.

What I Actually Want You to Walk Away With

Before I let you go start the account setup lesson, I want to be honest about what this course is actually trying to do, because I think it changes how you should approach the material.

There's a version of "learning AWS" that's really just cramming for a certification exam — memorizing enough facts and service limits to pass a multiple-choice test, then promptly forgetting most of it. You can absolutely do that, and if that's your goal, there are faster paths than this course. That's not what I'm building here.

What I actually want is for you to understand how these services fit together to solve real problems. Not "what's the maximum size of an S3 object" trivia, but "why would I reach for this service instead of that one, and what happens to my system when traffic spikes, or a region goes down, or my costs suddenly climb." That kind of understanding sticks with you in a way that memorized facts don't, and it's the difference between someone who passed a test and someone who can actually be handed a business problem and architect a solution for it. If you happen to sit for a certification exam after this, great — you'll probably do fine. But that's a byproduct, not the destination.

The good news is that getting there doesn't require much from you. You need a genuine willingness to learn and sit with some discomfort while things click into place. You need a computer or even just an iPad — nothing exotic. And you need a small AWS budget, which we just talked about. That's it. Everything else, we'll build together as we go.
